ARTIFACT:

This is a rare circa 1920's United States Air Service USAS pilot wing in Mess Dress or Shirt Size by Blackinton. The wing is in sterling silver and has a drop-in locking catch. 

We tend to think of wings in this size as being for wear on a pilot's shirt during warmer weather, but when a wing is as early as this and in this size, it's function was more likely for formal evening wear as a less ostentatious version of a full size wing, that would also be worn with a miniature medal bar on a tuxedo like uniform.

VINTAGE:

1920's.

SIZE:

Approximately 9/16" in height by 2" in length.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Sterling silver.

ATTACHMENT:

Horizontal pin with drop-in locking catch.
