Lazio, who was serving as United States Navy Shore Patrol in the area at the time. Unique. Boatswain's mate (abbreviated as BM) is a designation given by the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) to enlisted members. BM1: Boatswain's mate first class: Petty officer first class
