ARTIFACT:
This is an Extremely Rare 1890's Old West Yankton South Dakota Police Badge. This BIG beautiful badge that would have stood out from 50 paces away in its period of use, and looks even better now with the dark patina of the years giving away the badge's great age.
Yankton is rich in Dakota Territory, and South Dakota, history. Named after the Yankton Sioux Indian Tribe, Yankton was the first Territorial Capitol of The Dakota Territory. It was nicknamed "The River City" and was an important stopping-off point as Riverboats brought prospectors to search for gold in Deadwood and other Black Hills Mining Towns.
Yankton's biggest claim to "Old West" fame is probably being the place where, in early 1877, "Crooked Nose" Jack McCall, the killer of Wild Bill Hickock, was tried and hung for that
Though the city had settled down a bit by the time this badge was in use around the turn of the century, but we are still talking about South Dakota and the Missouri River here, so there was still plenty of work for the Yankton Police in the Still Wild West of ca 1900.
