ARTIFACT:
This is a circa 1900s-1910s Grady County, Oklahoma Deputy Sheriff badge worn by Oklahoma native C.D. "Bud" Mead. Mead probably chose to have a simple and direct nickname since his given name was Cuthbird (middle name Davis). Mead was a hard drinker who wore the badge during the time that Oklahoma gained statehood (1907) and the Choctaw and Chickasaw lost their land. He went on to enlist in the Army during the Great War and was involved in the chase leading to the eventual capture the iconic 1930s criminals of Bonnie and Clyde. Mead passed away in California in 1963, where he moved with his kin during the Great Depression. The badge is accompanied by three of Mead's identification cards, from the Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association of Oklahoma, the North Texas and Southern Oklahoma Peace Officers Association and the State of Oklahoma, County of Grady (photo credit: Meadfamilyhistory.com).
