ARTIFACT: This is an American Legion 40 and 8 Society "Chef de Gare" medal. The front of the medal shows a scene of men and horses on a French Railways boxcar, while the top bar reads LA SOCIETE DES 40 HOMMES AT 8 CHEVAUX (The Society of 40 Men and Eight Horses) AMERICAN LEGION 40/8. A name bar on the ribbon reads CHEF DE GARE (station master). The 40 and 8 Society was formed in Philadelphia in 1920 as a means of creating a higher echelon of membership and closer degree of kinship among the members of the newly-formed American Legion. The president, Joseph Breen, was given the title President of the Railroad.

VINTAGE: Circa 1920s.

SIZE: 3-13/16" height and 1-13/16" width

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Bronze medal with enamel accents, plated brass bar with silk ribbon.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with drop-in swivel catch on bar and rectangular loop attachment for medallion.

MARKINGS: N/A.

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): Medal is mellowly tarnished and ribbon shows medium wear.
