ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful, simple and elegant cheroot case in 800 silver presented by Adrian Dietrich Lothar van Trotha to "Cramer" in Muanza, German East Africa. The case was presented in 1900 while Trotha commanded the colonial force in what is now Tanzania. Trotha advocated brutality at any cost, and his cruel tactics during native uprisings earned him praise, respect and promotion. After managing a fair deal of slaughter in East Africa, Trotha loaned a hand in the atrocities committed during and after the Boxer Rebellion in China and soon after became Commander in Chief of German South West Africa. Here he achieved his piece de resistance: the near decimation of the Herero people, and later, the Nama. Public outrage caught up with Trotha only after tens of thousands of people, including women and children, died by shooting, bombardment, poisoning, entrapment, imprisonment or the subsequent disease and penury that survivors found in exile. He was relieved of his command but given generalship of the infantry, dying in 1920 of typhoid. The hat affixed to the lid of the case is in the style Trotha wore (see photo of Trotha courtesy of Wikipedia above).
