ARTIFACT: This is a Japanese fireman's axe/hook from the Edo period, also known as a "tomiguchi". The blade is triangular and used as a pick. The long oaken handle is ringed at intervals with steel, reinforced with rods of the same, and capped off at the bottom. There is also an L-shaped belt hook or grip attached to the handle. Tomiguchi were also used as effective weapons in hand-to-hand samurai combat.

VINTAGE: Circa late eighteenth century or early nineteenth century.

SIZE: Approximately 24" in length and 1-1/2" in diameter (base of handle); blade is about 1-1/2" by 3-1/4".

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Cast and forged steel, oak wood.

ATTACHMENT: L-shaped belt hook/grip attached to handle.

MARKINGS: None.

CONDITION: 7 (Very Fine): The tomiguchi shows some light to medium wear with areas of tarnish.
