ARTIFACT: 5 x 7 Black and white photograph of P-40 #106 on runway April-ish 1942. Tiger decal on fuselage, CAF sun visible on underside of wing, and shark face present. Nice sepia tone, clear details. A published photo in the book 'American Volunteer Group 'Flying Tigers' Aces' written by Terrill J. Clements has this write up on the photo: P40E-1 Kittyhawk Number 106 (no CAF serial), Loiwing/Baoshan, China April - May 1942. This somewhat hastily-marked appearance of this Kittyhawk was typical of the ex-USAAF received by the AVG in late March 1942 onwards. It was finished in standard Dark Olive Drab 41 and Neutral Gray 43 camouflage, with no visible trace of serial number on the vertical tail surface. AVG personnel obscured the fuselage stars with dark green paint and added Chinese insignia in the usual four positions on the wings, covering the US insignia in the process. The U.S. ARMY designators were left on the bottom of the wings however. The shark mouth was painted black, white, and red, with camouflage showing inside. The eye was white and black and Disney 'Flying Tiger' decals were also applied" [1]

Artifacts that belonged to members of the original Flying Tigers are extremely hard to acquire and rarely come up for sale. Often collectors lucky enough to acquire anything from the AVG will hold onto the pieces for their entire lifetime and families rarely let these artifacts go if they are lucky enough to still possess them. Don't miss this chance to own a true piece of WWII Aviation History.
