ARTIFACT: This is a wonderful circa 1892 framed jacquard woven tapestry depicting Christopher Columbus' sighting of America. The tapestry was designed and made at the Arlington Mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has one in its permanent collection. The tapestry commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus' voyage and was fashioned for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. It was inspired by a painting of the same scene by Herman Freihold Pluddeman, a nineteenth-century German artist. This tapestry has lots of detail and finesse, and was purchased in a beautiful, professionally-done frame.

VINTAGE: Circa 1892.

SIZE: Approximately 25-1/2" in height by 18" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Woven silk jacquard, glass, wood (oak), paper backing.

ATTACHMENT: Wire hanger.

MARKINGS: COLUMBUS SIGHTING AMERICA DESIGNED AND WOVEN AT THE ARLINGTON MILLS, LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A. embroidered at bottom.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a decorative arts collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VFEX09 LDEJX5/12 SDEJX05/20

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The tapestry appears to be near mint/mint, but has some light, fairly even speckling or foxing. More than one viewer of the tapestry though it was original to the piece, so it is not displeasing to the eye. It is assumed the tapestry is complete with borders under the matting, but this is not known for certain.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
