
SUBJECT:
This is a nice World War II United States Navy Reserve lot attributed to Ben W. Garner that includes a gold-filled pilot wing by Balfour. Other items are two shoulder boards, a name strip for B. W. GARNER USNR, a souvenir stub from the Hawthorne Flying Service, Inc., a protractor and compass, a time converter and a device for air speed correction.
VINTAGE:
Circa World War II.
SIZE:
All items are various sizes: wing is 7/8” height and 2-3/4” width.
CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS:
Wing: 1/20 10K gold-filled; shoulder boards: silk embroidered in cotton/silk with tape ribbon; name strip: leather painted in gold; stub: printed paper; protractor and compass: clear yellow plastic; other instruments: glossy paperboard, string (on one).
ATTACHMENT:
Wing: horizontal pin with come-under swivel locking catch; shoulder boards: plastic button on each; air speed correction device (hole with string).
MARKINGS:
1/20 10K GF BALFOUR; handwriting and Garner's name on back of instruments; initials carved in compass.
