ARTIFACT: Beautiful circa early 1920's 102nd Cavalry – New Jersey National Guard 'Essex Troop' service medal in unmarked sterling silver. Loosely formed in 1890 by Colonel James E. Fleming of the "Essex Club", the Essex Troop mustered for regular drills and participated in parades and other events. In 1893 they petitioned to become a cavalry troop of the National Guard of New Jersey and were accepted. In 1921, after the Army reorganization, they became part of the 29th Division and were named the 102nd Cavalry. This 100% Duty Medal was awarded after all returned home from occupation duty in 1919. The planchet is shaped like a Maltese cross and shows four eagles, wings spread, bearing the US Shield on their chests and the center features a nicely detailed horses head in the center and surrounding it reads: "100 PERCENT DUTY". At the top the letters: "ET" are entwined. The planchet is suspended from a ring and yellow silk ribbon and the ribbon bears crossed cavalry swords with the number: "102" in the top center.
