ARTIFACT:
Great 1910 Butterick Corporation Delineator Magazine Jenny Wren Club member lapel pin by Dieges & Clust in New York. Readymade clothing was becoming increasingly popular and cost efficient which led to a decrease in pattern sales for Butterick and other pattern makers. To encourage women and girls to continue making their own clothing the Jenny Wren Club was formed. The club was highlighted in the Delineator Magazine, which was named after an elite master dressmaker pattern designer. The magazine especially supported Butterick patterns as a convenient and stylish option to readymade clothing, asserting that homemade fashions were of better quality and fit. The Jenny Wren Club was a national program that sought to preserve home-sewing skills for girls of younger generations in the face of readymade clothing. The pin shows a "D" in the center with a pair of scissors and spool of thread in raised detail. The outer edge features a scroll that reads: "THE DELINEATOR JENNY WREN CLUB".
