This is a great 1890s US Mail hat badge #3. The back is a modified pinback from double loops with a straight-pin.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1890s.
SIZE:
About 3" in width by 2-7/16" in height.
CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS:
Silver plated brass and painted brass.
ATTACHMENT:
Horizontal pin with a “C” catch.
MARKINGS:
The markings are on the front, above and below the "3": C.J. HELLERS PAT.APR.10.88.
