SUBJECT:
This is an unofficial senior United States Naval astronaut wing as worn by Commander Robert L. Crippen, commander of the space shuttle’s first launch in 1981. The wing is an aviator wing with a commander’s star and a NASA attachment at its center, and comes with an affidavit of its authenticity and a “Young Crippen” Columbia mission patch.

Circa 1980s.

Wing: approximately 1-1/4” height and 2-3/4” width; case: approximately 1-1/8” in height and 2-5/8” in width and in 3-1/4” length; patch: approximately 4-7/8” in height and 4-1/2” in width; affidavit: approximately 8-1/2” x 11”.
CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS:
Wing: gold-plated brass; case: velvet covered cardboard, silk, cardboard; patch: fully embroidered in cotton/silk/polyester threads; affidavit: paper.

Wing: two posts with covered clutch-back catches.
