ARTIFACT:
This is an extraordinarily rare Crimean War era helmet plate for the 17th Lancers, a British Army cavalry regiment also known as the "Duke of Cambridge's Own". The 17th is particularly known for its participation in the ill-fated yet bravely executed "Charge of the Light Brigade" memorialized by Tennyson. The beautiful helmet plate is in gilt brass with a background of golden rays and a large and ornate affixed insignia entirely in silver. The group's motto "Death or Glory", is proudly displayed here, with the prominent silver skull taking the place of the word "DEATH". The plate was presented to NCO Tom Romans (BEM) of the Lancers upon his retirement from the British Army. This plate has been on display at Tom's famous pub, the "Royal Tournament", as well as at Highcliffe and Lulworth Castles. It has been rated by field experts as having a 9-10 for condition. The plate comes with supporting paperwork from the Chairman of the Regimental Band Association, 17th/21st Lancers, a previous owner of the plate via a direct purchase from Mr. Romans. Also included is a DVD of a 2005 discussion between Graham Lay of the BBC's Antiques Roadshow and militaria expert Paul Skinner.

Approximately 5-1/4" in height and 7-5/8" in width.
