Fabulous Ca. 1952 Pen & Ink Self Portrait of Olympic Fencer & Illustrator Ed Vebell

ARTIFACT: Fabulous circa 1952 pen and ink self portrait of Olympic Fencer and illustrator Ed Vebell. The portrait shows Mr. Vebell in US Olympic fencing garb at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympic Games, where he made it to the semi-finals and the quarter-finals for the individual event and team tournament respectively. Ed Vebell is a well-known illustrator who began his career as an artist at the young age of 14. He continued his passion after being drafted into WWII by creating artwork for military magazines and after the conflict ended, he attended the Nuremburg Trials in 1945 as a courtroom artist. US Holocaust Memorial Museum has since preserved many of his illustrations from the experience. Before returning to the states, Mr. Vebell spent time in Paris continuing his career as an illustrator in his own studio while practicing his skill as an ??p??e fencer. When he finally returned home he became a member of the US Olympic fencing team, but was only able to compete in the 1952 Games due to a growing family and detached retina. His career as an illustrator continues today in Connecticut, in addition to the accomplishments above Ed Vebell has contributed numerous works to American magazines as a freelance illustrator and he has designed sixteen stamps for the United States Postal Service.
