ARTIFACT: Lovely Charge of Chasseurs D'Afrique at Balaclava commemorative pitcher with two battle scenes nicely detailed in black paint. The Battle of Balaclava took place during the Crimean War, October 25, 1854. The battle was fought by the Russian cavalry, Ottoman redoubts, and the Scottish 93rd Highland Regiment, after the first line of Ottoman forces retreated the Russian cavalry charged the second defensive line held by the remaining Ottoman forces and the Scottish 93rd. The line held has become known as the 'Thin Red Line', which held and allowed British forces to overtake Russians before a misinterpreted order led to the Charge of the Light Brigade and great losses for the British. The pitcher features gilt embellishments around the top, handle, and base. Under the image of charging cavalry and downed horses it reads: "CHARGE OF THE CHASSEURS D'AFRIQUE AT BALACLAVA" and the side showing soldiers on horses with fallen men below reads: "CHARGE OF THE SCOTS GREYS AT BALACLAVA". The underside shows a maker's mark that reads: "IMPERIAL GRANITE" and shows "25.3993" in red detail.
