ARTIFACT: This is a named circa 1920s life-saving medal for the United States Volunteer Life Saving Corps (USVLSC) auxiliary in sterling silver. The USVLSC existed in fifteen states where there were no federally-run life-saving stations and acted to supplement the U. S. Life Saving Service. The medal was presented to Harold. B. Kitschell at Sheepshead Bay, New York on August 15, 1920 for saving someone from drowning. The medal is in three parts, with an eagle atop Kitschell's name, a lifeboat hanging below that and a life preserver, anchor and oars as the bottom-most medallion.

VINTAGE: Circa 1920s.

SIZE: Approximately 3-1/2" in height and 1-3/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Sterling silver.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with tongue-style catch, chain links.

MARKINGS: STERLING (listed on each the reverse of each medallion) SHEEPSHEAD BAY AUGUST 15, 1920 on reverse of bottom medallion.

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The medal shows little wear and has a handsome tarnish.
