ARTIFACT: This is a named circa 1905 life-saving medal for the New York Volunteer Life Saving Corps (NYVLSC). Many states where no federally-run life-saving stations existed had their own lifesaving corps. The medal was presented to Frank A. Digan on September 17, 1905 at Coney Island, New York fro saving someone from drowning. The medal is in bronze, and is in three parts: an eagle atop Digan's name, a lifeboat hanging below that and a life preserver, anchor and oars as the bottom-most medallion.

VINTAGE: Circa 1905.

SIZE: Approximately 3-5/16" in height and 1-3/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Bronze.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with C catch, chain links.

MARKINGS: FRANK A. DIGAN; CONEY ISLAND SEPT. 17 '05 on reverse
