ARTIFACT:
Beautiful and rare circa 1910 National Motor Vehicle Co. enameled lapel pin. National Motor Vehicle Co. was established in the early 1900's and National's first model was an electric runabout called the Style A in 1900. By 1905, gas-powered engines became the trend and National introduced one of the industry's first six-cylinder engines in 1905. History shows that prior to WWI, National had the top record and a most impressive race history of successes and wins. In fact, the only stock car to ever win the Indianapolis 500 was a 6-cylinder National in 1912. Racing was near and dear to the company, Arthur C. Newby, a company president was one of the original investors that created the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Company mergers in the 1920's and cost prohibitive manufacturing saw the close of National in 1924. The oval pin reads: "NATIONAL" in the center in blue detail against a background of white enamel showing an image of a building and the outer edge features blue and gilt embellishments.
