ARTIFACT:
This is a circa 1890s paired cow horn head and beaded coup stick used by the tribes of the Plains Indians. These tribes counted bravery in the face of an enemy warrior very important, and would keep track of these acts of bravery, also called "counting coup" or "coo stick". One way to demonstrate valor was to touch a warrior in a rival tribe with a hand or a coup stick and escape unharmed (this was considered better than escaping wounded). Sometimes the number of brave feats would be recorded as notches on the stick. This stick is decorated with bands of solid green beads alternating with multi-colored beads.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1890s.
SIZE:
Approximately 15-5/8" in height and 10-1/2" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Horn, cloth-wrapped stick, brain-tanned leather, beads.

7 (Very Fine): The coup stick shows some moderate wear and there are two areas where the beads have come unstrung or separated from the stick; lanyard is missing.
