ARTIFACT: This is an extremely rare circa 1933-1936 United States Navy squadron patch for Fighter Squadron 5 (VF-5/VF-5B) aka the "Red Rippers". The patch comes with a framed period photograph of four of the squadron's Grumman FF-1s ("FiFis"), two-seat fighters used at that time. The photo captures the planes immediately after flying off of the USS Lexington. The patch shows the squadron's famous boar's head, a mascot borrowed from a Gordon's Gin bottle.

VINTAGE: Circa 1933-1936.

SIZE: Patch: approximately 5-5/16" in height and 3-1/2" in width; photo: approximately 9" in height and 11-1/4" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Painted leather patch, wool backing; photograph, glass, wood frame, wire.

ATTACHMENT: Frame: two eye hooks with wire.

MARKINGS: None.

CONDITION: 7- (Very Fine-): The items are in various conditions but overall are very fine. The patch has seen moderate to heavy wear and has some areas of crackling. The frame has light to medium wear in spots on the frame.
