ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful World War I United States Navy overseas tunic with a stunning bullion British-made wing. This tunic was worn during overseas combat service by New York City native and probable Silver Star recipient (although we have no corroborating information on this award) Stanley Thompson Curran. It is slightly mis-named to him in the collar (by the tailor: typical mistake then, as today): Ensign S. T. Curren USN. This tunic is a lovely British tailor-made piece with sewn down Lt. JG shoulder boards (upgraded from ensign: slightly different toning in gold lace is apparent) and a single overseas stripe, along with a large, thick, and heavily-detailed British-made bullion US Navy pilot wing. The tunic shows light wear and obviously was worn in the cockpit, perhaps when Curran (sp?) earned his Silver Star, the details of which will follow later. Designated a Naval Aviator in January 1918, Curran (USN Naval Aviator No. 287, Serial No. 28110) served in England out of NAS Killingholme starting five months later. His low number reveals that he was in the first batch of pilots to be trained. On October 11 Curran was piloting a crew of four in an H-16 Flying Boat: this day the mission was laying mines in the North Sea, a routine duty which another day could have been reconnaissance or anti-submarine/anti-airship patrols. His craft lost engine power for an unknown reason and he ended up the sole survivor of the ensuing crash. He received a "Letter of Commendation for Heroism" and he spent the duration of the war in hospital with his injuries. Curran's family remained military-oriented: his wife was a Navy nurse, his daughter a Navy Wave, and his son a Marine wounded at Iwo Jima. Curran passed away in 1949.

VINTAGE: Circa World War I.
