ARTIFACT: This is an 1837 dated membership certificate for the Boston Marine Society, the oldest sea captain association anywhere. The group had already been known for 67 years as the The Fellowship Club when it adopted its current name in 1809. This certificate was issued to Captain Theo B. Cunningham during the period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, a particularly prosperous time for sea merchants in Boston and in other United States ports. (credit: www.bostonmarinesociety.org) The certificate bears a red wax seal and is displayed in a painted wooden frame. It shows seven scenes, the topmost of which features King Neptune. There is a local printer's mark in the bottom right-hand corner.

VINTAGE: Circa 1837.

SIZE: Approximately 11-7/8" in height and 17-1/2" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Wood, glass, paper, wax seal.

ATTACHMENT: Nails keeping back of frame attached.

MARKINGS: 1837; Callender Sculp State Street BOSTON mark in lower corner.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a societies and organizations collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. SHOP VBEL13 LABEX5/13 SLIEX12/13 SDEX4/14
