ARTIFACT: Beautiful early WWII Italian 2nd Army in Yugoslavia (Bosnia) medal in bronze. During WWII, in 1941, the Germans and Axis powers led an invasion of Yugoslavia. Also known as the April War, the Italian 2nd and 9th Army were engaged in the conflict. Under General Vittorio Ambrosio, the Italian 2nd Army was ordered to cross the border of Yugoslavia and maintain control of Ljubljana and the Dalmatian Coast. The medal was awarded to the veterans of the Italian 2nd Army that participated in the April War, this example is bronze - later the medal was issued in zinc. The center of the medallion shows a winged angel or goddess carrying a sword and shield while soaring above the Yugoslavian border with detailed embellishments of some of the main locations that were destroyed or where combat was heavy. The reverse of the medal reads: "2 ARMATA "OLTRE LA META" (MORE THAN HALF) and depicts an eagle standing on a pile of swords. The front of the medallion reads: "AFFER" for Costantino Affer, 1906-1987, an Italian art medalist.
