ARTIFACT: This is an extremely Rare & Desirable Flying Tigers "Christmas Scarf" which Madame Chiang Kai-Shek presented to every member of the AVG from the Generalissimo on December 25th 1941. This is the smaller, nearly square scarf that the Ground Personnel in the AVG received. Some AVG members wore theirs, some had comrades sign them and embroidered them up (like the one offered elsewhere here at Flying Tiger Antiques), and some just folded them up and packed them away. This one looks to have seen some use, and although the scarf itself is in excellent condition, the Generalissimo's signature or "Chop" looks to have faded out and was enhanced by someone in more recent times to make it more displayable. The embroidery is all there, but as can be seen from the back, it faded from red to almost white. The great detail about this scarf, is that it is biographical. It comes with a wonderful little fountain pen note explaining that it originally belonged to Chennault's Chief of Administration for the First American Volunteer Group, Edward J. Harris. The note reads on the obverse: "This silk scarf once belonged to 1st Lt. Edward J. Harris. Harris was the Chief of Administration for General Claire L. Chennault's First American Volunteer Group or better known as the Flying Tigers. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek gave all the members of the A.V.G. scarves like this one as Christmas gifts in 1941. The embroidered emblem is the Generalissimo's personal signature or "chop" as it is known in China. There were less than 320 scarves given." On the reverse the note reads: Mr. & Mrs. Edward J. Harris Clifton Forge, Virginia This is yet another great piece of AVG history we are pleased to be able to offer you here at Flying Tiger Antiques. Artifacts that belonged to members of the original Flying Tigers are extremely hard to acquire and rarely come up for sale. Often collectors lucky enough to acquire anything from the AVG will hold onto the pieces for their entire lifetime and families rarely let these artifacts go if they are lucky enough to still possess them. Don't miss this chance to own a true piece of WWII Aviation History.
