ARTIFACT:
This is a rare circa 1938 Pan Am medal commemorating the flight jubilee (1912-1937) and loss at Pago Pago of Captain Edwin C. Musick. Hired as Pan Am's very first pilot in 1927, unassuming and respected "Meticulous Musick" had already been, among other things, an aircraft and car mechanic, a US Army civilian flight instructor, a US Marine Corps officer, as well as a barnstormer and bootlegger. He set new aviation records in his eleven short years with Pan Am, the most notable being the first transpacific mail flight in his China Clipper in 1935. Headed to New Zealand on the first airmail flight to Auckland in 1938, Musick and his crew were lost in an explosion off Pago Pago after making a decision to dump fuel in hopes for a safer landing. The reverse of the medal reads CAPTAIN EDWIN C. MUSICK BORN AUGUST 13 1894 ST. LOUIS MISSOURI TRAIL BLAZER SOUTH AMERICA CHINA NEW ZEALAND HARMON TROPHY 1935 LOST AT PAGO PAGO JANUARY 11, 1938.
