ARTIFACT:
This is a badge for an extremely rare rank: United States Air Force Cambridge Research Center Security Force Chief. Initially known as Cambridge Field Station, created by the USAAF just after World War II and sited next to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the facility picked up where the research in radio, radar and electronics by the wartime labs had left off. In July 1949, the Field Station became the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL). The Research Center worked in conjunction with the Bedford radar test facility at Bedford Airfield on current developments, paving the way for the SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) Air Defense System. This badge dates to circa 1950 (early Korean War).

Gilt brass, enamel.
