ARTIFACT: Heavy, covered, WWI Presentation Trophy to Captain E. H. Watson by the Officers of his command of the USS Madawaska as part of the USN Transport Force and autographed photo of Captain Watson from 1922. Captain Watson was born the son of a Commander in 1874 and graduated the Naval Academy in 1895. He served aboard the USS Detroit during the Spanish-American War. During WWI he became Naval Attache to Japan until 1922 and took command of the Destroyer Squadron ELEVEN in 1923. Sadly, after a navigation error on the part of his flagship, Captain Watson lost seven of the Squadron's Destroyers, though he was praised for his efforts to help those in distress during the disaster and for accepting full responsibility for the great loss. Captain Watson received the Navy Cross for his time as Commanding Officer aboard the USS Alabama and was also appointed Assistant Commandant of the Fourteenth Naval District, in Hawaii before his death in 1942. The trophy reads: "CAPTAIN EDWARD HOWE WATSON U.S. NAVY", "WITH THE AFFECTIONATE ESTEEM AND REGARD OF THE OFFICERS OF HIS COMMAND 1917 - 1918 ONE MILLION MEN BY APRIL 1ST." The autographed photo is dated 1922.
