ARTIFACT: Early 1960's United States Jet Pilot Helmet decorated orange and featuring orange reflective stripes with white reflective diamonds. The external microphone shows a painted orange circle with: "RM 37" painted in the center, the same orange as the helmet is painted in. This likely means this was a United States Navy Radioman's helmet, as RM was the appropriate ranking for an enlisted Radioman in the US Navy and Coast Guard. The APH - 5 type helmet shows the incorporation of the visor housing with the shade. The shade moves and locks by pushing the round button knob and sliding it up or down along the steel track. The helmet shell is constructed of a fiberglass cloth reinforced with epoxy resin, gas mask mounts, and an external boom mounted microphone. The inside of the helmet shows a hard foam core lining, mounted foam core earphones, canvas strap, padded vinyl, and a leather strip lining the edge of the helmet. One side still displays the canvas strap and steel buckle that would affix the pilot's gas mask and the cords for the audio control are still intact.
