ARTIFACT:
Extremely rare WWI United States Navy or United States Marine Corps Aviation Cadet visor hat in 'aviation' forest green and named to two cadets. The visor hat features a bullion hat badge - an anchor embroidered on wool felt - and gilt brass button details on either side that show an eagle standing proud atop an anchor. The interior features a leather headband and shows three names: "ILES", "F. LAMB", and "R.A. WARREN" along with a maker's stamp that reads: "THE SERVICE SHOP" in the center surrounded by: "ARMY AND NAVY SERVICE CO. 293 WASHINGTON ST., BOSTON, MASS."
A search for "F. Lamb" resulted in three possible aviators. The first Naval Aviator #1674 Frank Ignatius Lamb 2nd Lt., USMC (Miami, Haiti, Quantico) helped develop dive bombing techniques. The second Naval Aviator #1907 Frank Lamb Ensign, USN (Pensacola, Rockaway). Finally, though unlikely Naval Aviator #2780 Frank I. Lamb.
ŇR.A. WarrenÓ was probably the last wearer of the hat and is listed as a USN Student Officer 32 Weston St., Waltham, MA.
The name ŇILESÓ is written in the hat, but no record of him can be found in WWI USN/USMC Aviation, so itŐs possible that he Ňwashed outÓ of pilot training.
A third name can be seen on the visor in red detail, it reads: "W.C. TREUHAFT". William W. C. Treuhaft was a USN Student Officer from Cleveland, Ohio. He may have washed out of the program, or just not completed training on account of the war ending, because there is no record of him beyond the above in the Navy. He had a rich civilian life, details can be found on the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History's website.

CONDITION:
6 (Fine+): The visor hat shows moderate to heavy wear, areas of moth nips to the reverse and side, inside leather band shows areas of separation, much of the gilt details remain intact, handsome patina on bullion hat badge, overall very fine condition.
