ARTIFACT:
Scarce early 1943 Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) uniform button in wartime shortage plastic and steel. The center of the button features a standing, spread winged eagle in nice relief detail. During WWI, the women who fought alongside the men were often left to find their own housing and food while stationed overseas. Upon returning home medical, pension, and disability benefits were not available to women. Edith Nourse Rogers introduced a bill to Congress that called for an official separate wing of the US Army for women, to be sure they would receive the same protection and benefits as their male counterparts while serving and upon returning home. The bill passed and became lawÉand the WAAC was established.
