ARTIFACT: Great Cold War United States Army 56th Artillery Brigade Pershing Missileman Badge, German-made circa 1972. The badge shows artillery and reads: BRIGADE", "56 TH FA", and shows lightning bolts on either side of the missile point and "QRA" (Quick Reaction Alert) at the base of the badge. The QRA protocol was initiated to ensure a portion of each unit was always at the highest level of combat readiness and was required to react within seconds of verified orders. In fact, the entire command needed to be fully operational inside two hours after any alert activation. The Pershing Missileman Badge was awarded locally to individuals that achieved proficiency in using the Pershing Missile System and was only awarded for a short period between the years 1968-1979. After June 1971, the style of the Missileman badge changed to reflect the new designation, showing the lightning bolts from the insignia. This badge came along with the 1970 example, see link below.
