ARTIFACT: This is a scarce circa early 20th century Spanish Silver Cross of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic (Orden de Isabel la Católica). Although the Order itself has been in existence since 1815, the Silver Cross (Cruz de Plata) grade was created in 1903 to acknowledge the services of palace and civil officials. The award has been given to many Spaniards and non-Spaniards alike who have shared the common cause of serving the nation of Spain. Queen Isabella I of Castile is revered as a national icon: she is not merely Ferdinand's queen who gave Columbus his ships. She was the driving force behind the complete overhaul of the Spanish Government starting with her assumption of the throne in 1474 as well as the Reconquista: the final retaking of all Spanish land from non-Catholic forces. As late as 1974 Isabella was granted the title "Servant of God". The medallion at the center of the cross reads "A La Lealtad Acrisolada" (To Proven Loyalty). The cross hangs from a wreath and above that, a gold and white ribbon.
