ARTIFACT: Circa 1913 log book of the Yacht Ultima Thule written in a Spanish-American War period United States Navy Torpedo Boat Log Book. The cover reads: "LOG BOOK YACHT" ULTIMA THULE". The first few interior pages show the ship's records and mates of the voyage. The cover has separated from the binding, but the pages and back cover remain intact. The inside cover page shows a US Navy stamp with an eagle bearing a US shield on its chest and clutching an anchor in its talons – surrounding reads: "DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY BUREAU OF NAVIGATION" and beneath "N. Eq. 36". The center of the cover page reads: "TORPEDO LOG BOOK", "U. S. S. ULTIMA THULE", COMMANDED BY "CLANDENING MEREDITH CAPPER", U.S.N. FROM: "WASHINGTON, DC". The Capper family was originally from Frederick County, Virginia. Clandening's father was a captain of artillery in the American Expeditionary Force and served in Europe during WWI. Clandening was born on July 12, 1883, married in 1903 and made Washington City home with the two children Meredith (1904) and Mary (1907). The log book is dated for a voyage that started on August 13th, 1913.

MARKINGS: "4-608", "DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY BUREAU OF NAVIGATION" and beneath "N. Eq. 36".

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine—Very Fine): The log book shows moderate to heavy wear, spot of discoloration, and wear to the corners, front cover has detached, but all pages and back cover remain intact.
