ARTIFACT: Great, salty circa 1946 Chinese – made United States Marine Corps 1st Division silver ring. In August of 1942, the 1st Division was deployed to the island of Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands, stationed off the coast on the USS Texas. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 1st Div. were part of military forces that fought and won the Battle of Guadalcanal, also known as "Operation Shoestring" - the first major offensive between the Allied forces and Japan. Allied troops suffered losses nearing 200, but nearly all of the Japanese involved in the battle were killed. The battle successfully secured the Solomon Islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida Island from the grasp of the Imperial Japanese Army. The front of the ring reads: "GUADALCANAL" in vertical letters centered with a raised diamond, each side of the ring features raised embellishments – one side a Chinese pagoda and the other side, a dragon.
