ARTIFACT:
Beautiful, large circa 1900 Miami, Florida Fire Commissioner Badge named to "Captain" Charles J. Rose ??? Civil War Veteran and early Miami resident. The center of the badge depicts a ladder, hook, helmet, etc. and above reads: "C.J. ROSE ??? FIRE COMMISSIONER" and beneath: "MIAMA FLA." in a stunning gold front or gold filled piece, appropriately in "rose" gold, with hard fired black enamel.
Not sure why the misspelling, although some areas of the country (mostly mid-west, which would tie in with Rose's Ohio origins) pronounce an "I" at the end of a word as "a" or phonetically "uh". Naomi can be pronounced "Niomah", so it is possible, given the early period of this badge relative to the existence of the city/community, that the misspelling was a spelling error based on phonetics. The badge shows some wear on its high points, so was worn proudly by Miami Pioneer Captain Charles J. Rose.
The determination of early citizens to provide educational facilities for their children is illustrated in the story of Captain C. J. Rose who came from Ohio in 1891 to take up a homestead in the territory west of Miami, where a little community sprang into being. Their request for a school was granted when the required ten children were enrolled, but as there was some delay, the captain and his neighbors secured driftwood from the beach and built their own school house.
