ARTIFACT:
WWII British military hat badge from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement home for retired British Army. The retirement/nursing home is located in Chelsea, London and was established by King Charles II in 1682. Residents are known as 'in-pensioners' or 'Chelsea pensioners' and are encouraged to always wear their full dress military uniforms while in the home complete with their insignia and medals. While outside the Royal Hospital, residents are distinguished by the scarlet red coats they wear. The center of the badge depicts a poppy, thistle, oak, and laurel leaves and is encircled by a strap and buckle that reads: "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" in raised lettering and along the bottom reads: "ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA".
