ARTIFACT:
This is a wonderful circa 1880s helmet plate for the 20th Middlesex (Artists) Rifles. The Artist Rifles came into being in 1860 shortly after British volunteers began banding together due to the threat of invasion by Napoleon III. The plate is in silvered bronze and is shaped as a Knight's Cross. The central plate shows the busts of the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva, and the Roman god of war, Mars, and reads Cum Marte Minerva (Mars with Minerva).
VINTAGE:
Circa 1880s.
SIZE:
Approximately 4-1/4" in height and 2-13/16" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Silvered bronze.
ATTACHMENT:
Three loops; brads holding center plate.
