ARTIFACT: Nice early 20th century Igorot carving from the Philippine Islands. The Igorot people are from the area of Luzon. The carving or bulul were traditionally placed in close proximity to rice granaries because this was believed to bring an abundant harvest. This example is a bulul in the traditional seated position with a variation to the placement of the arms, when used for ceremonial purposes the bulul was often seen with arms crossed along raised knees. This example shows the carving with one arm bent - palm to cheek, as if thinking.
