ARTIFACT:
This is a scarce author-signed hardcover copy of "Rickenbacker: An Autobiography". Born in 1890, Edward Vernon Rickenbacker first gained fame as the United States' premier ace during World War I. He went on to become a famous aviator, the founder Rickenbacker Motor Company (later Rickenbacker-Berks) and longtime head of Eastern Airlines. This autobiography was published in 1967 by Prentice-Hall and has its original dust jacket. It contains photos of Rickenbacker posing with Amelia Earhart and President Calvin Coolidge, among other personalities. It also displays newspaper clippings and illustrations pertinent to the time when Rickenbacker was wrongly believed dead in a 1941 Atlanta plane crash. The Atlanta crash would not be his only brush with premature death: he spent twenty-four days on a life raft in 1942 after a the B-17 aboard which he was flying over the Pacific failed. Rickenbacker passed away in 1973.
