ARTIFACT:
Rare 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Officer Veteran's badge or insignia in bullion on dark blue wool. Mustered as the 18th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment in Bangor, 1862 and was renamed the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery in defense of Washington, DC in 1863 before being reassigned to the Army of the Potomac in 1864 during the Overland Campaign. The 1st Maine suffered the largest Union casualties lost in a single day of battle during the Siege of Petersburg when Col. Chaplin ordered the Regiment to cross open-land straight into the fire of Confederates, an order that resulted in over 100 dead and nearly 500 wounded. Unsure of this examples usage, but it appears worn and reads: "1st ME. H.A." in beautiful bullion detail.

7 (Very Fine): The patch shows minor to moderate wear, bullion remains bright, moth nips to edges, overall very fine condition.
